
Purpose of the Institute of Navigation
The Institute of Navigation (ION) is a non-profit professional society dedicated to the advancement of the art and science of navigation. It serves a diverse community including those interested in air, space, marine, land navigation, and position determination. Although basically a national organization, its membership is worldwide, and it is affiliated with the International Association of the Institute of Navigation.
Structure of the Organization
The ION is a national organization with its headquarters based in Alexandria, Virginia. Within the national organization, there are several local chapters and student organizations including the Ohio University student chapter. The l ocal sections include Alberta, Dayton, Houston, New England, Southwest New Mexico, Greater Philadelphia, Rocky Mountain, San Diego, Southern California, and Washington, D.C. Under several of these geographic sections, there are student organiz ations. There are student chapters at California Maritime Academy, University of Colorado, Stanford University, University of Calgary, the University of Florida, and, of course, at Ohio University. Navigation at Ohio University
The OU student chapter's goal is to promote a forum for students, faculty, and colleagues of the university to discuss, educate, and be educated on issues dealing with navigation.
Ohio University is fortunate to house a variety of navigation related departments within the university. The Ohio University School of Aviation is under the Russ College of Engineering on Ohio University's West Green. Flight Classes are hel d at the University owned airport in Albany, Ohio (UNI). Also, as part of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Avionics Engineering Center is a research organization that combines electrical engineering with the field of navigation. The Avionics Engineering Center is located within the Stocker Engineering Building at Ohio University.
