Info on the

Design Process & the

Final Design Report (Begin with the end in mind)

Initial Project Discussion

> NISH Award for Workplace Innovation and Design

> Why This Project?, and Student decisions about the project

Assignments:

1) Each individual should write out their ideas for team procedures and effectiveness in their notebook, and teams should meet soon to develop team operating procedures and a basic "team effectiveness plan" that defines how you will develop, monitor and improve your team effectiveness, and a list of initial team roles, including "team leader / manager", "planning / scheduling leader", "manufacturing leaders", "communication leaders", "analysis leaders", etc.  Post these items on your team web page (or on BlackBoard File Sharing) by the end of the week for external review.

> Manufacturing leaders should see Randy in 011 (this week or next week) to begin discussing a safety training plan.

2. Each individual should do some thinking and informal research on the need statement and record it in their design notebook.

 11

Evaluating the IDEO design culture

> Creativity,

voice of the customer,

team process &

Conceptual Design

> IDEO Website

> ME101 students will join us

Assignments:

1) Work on "Team Profile" web pages this week using KEEP toolkit or similar.

2) Continue thinking and doing informal research on the need statement.  Try to apply some of the lessons learned about creativity from IDEO.

 12

 13

R-U-Ready: Come to class with a written list of project ideas related to the needs statement (in your design notebook), and some pens/pencils that are good for sketching out ideas.  Please read the guidelines for the NISH Award for Workplace Innovation and Design

Discussions/Applications:
Creativity - How do you define it?

How do you encourage it?  What works for you?

> Put on different hats

> Think like a beginner

In-class brainstorming / creativity session with ME101 students

1) Brainstorm ideas for responding to the general needs statement for the NISH Workplace Innovation Design Competition (project ideas and/or conceptual designs).  Give all members a chance to give their "top" idea first, then open it up to all ideas.

2) Look for ways to combine ideas and practice integrative thinking (to compare to opposing ideas and without settling for one or the other to generate a new one that contains elements of the others but is superior to both) to come up with more alternatives

3) Use some sort of selection process to filter the ideas and select a number of ideas to pursue further

4) Identify what aspects of the project are most important and what questions need to be answered to make a good decision on what projects/concepts to pursue

Assignment: Follow up individually and in teams on the project ideas from the brainstorming.  Document your team's ongoing process to evaluate and select projects / concepts that are worthy of further investigation.

 14
Team Day:

No class, but teams should meet as needed to complete these tasks:

1) Reach team consensus on operating procedures, team effectiveness plan, and initial team roles.  Post them on your team web page (if developed) or on your Blackboard group page if your web page isn't ready.

2) Before class on Monday, assign research and patent searching tasks to each team member (for Monday/Tuesday) to help gather the necessary information to continue the project and concept selection process.

3) Discuss in your team how the class, the project and the design process have gone (so far), and have a team representative send an anonymous feedback email with your team's concerns and questions.

4) Continue working on your team profile web page. Target completion of first draft is next week.

 17

Teams 1, 2 and 3 meet with Engineering Librarian Michael Wilson, for research sessions in the training room in the lower floor of the CSC building **.  You will learn while searching for introductory information on your project, doing product benchmarking, and searching for applicable standards.

>Data Base Searches

> Standards (CPSC,ANSI, NSSN (Global), NIST, etc.)

Teams 4, 5, and 6 should report to class to discuss Intellectual Property Rights & Patent Searches

>Free Patent Fetcher!
Get complete U.S. Patent PDF files after you have performed a patent search

> Meet in 103 and go to your "breakout rooms" with your "partner teams" from ME101

> ME101 groups will be working on their own on their projects and SrD teams will be working on their projects

> SrD team members are asked to help the ME101 groups get started on their task and to serve as resources/consultants if they have questions.

Project Milestone: By the end of the week, narrow your focus to between 4 and 6 ideas - can be a combination of different need areas and concepts.

 8  - 6th Week

Team Assessments this week:

Based on your team decision, please complete the 1st round of peer reviews (for feedback and improvement) either on Blackboard (assignments tab, peer rating survey) or at the CATME online site

25 minute "observed team meetings"
1:10: Team 5
1:35: Team 6
> We will observe your team dynamics and "listen in" as you discuss your leading project ideas and work to narrow down to one need area or to decide between alternative concepts.
> in 103 or the location of your choice
> please schedule ~5 minutes at the end of the mtg agenda for general feedback on team performance to date

> All other teams please do team/individual work on the project

Assignment: This week a representative from each team should meet with Librarian Michael Wilson to review the quality of their background research for the introduction section of the report.  Michael will contribute to the final grading of this part of the report.

 9

25 minute "observed team meetings"
1:10: Team 3
1:35: Team 1
> We will observe your team dynamics and "listen in" as you discuss your leading project ideas and work to narrow down to one need area or to decide between alternative concepts.
> in 103 or the location of your choice
> please schedule ~5 minutes at the end of the mtg agenda for general feedback on team performance to date

Assignment: Second draft of Introduction and background research (Section 1.0 of the Final Design Report) in e-copy due by the end of the day.

 10

 11

25 minute "observed team meetings"
1:10: Team 2
1:35: Team 4
> We will observe your team dynamics and "listen in" as you discuss your leading project ideas and work to narrow down to one need area or to decide between alternative concepts.
(in 103 or the location of your choice)
> please schedule ~5 minutes at the end of the mtg agenda for general feedback on team performance to date

Project Milestone: By the end of the day, narrow your focus to one need area (and between 3 and 5 concepts) with a clear idea of the project scope.

Note: Final grading of the team's concepts (based on the design report) will include points for documenting failed attempts (fail often to succeed sooner) and will reward authentic creativity.  A-level work must include at least 4 feasible alternatives and at least one truly unique idea that responds to the need but is not based directly on a customer request or a benchmarked product - a new idea that the customer will appreciate but that he/she hadn't imagined.  B-level work is at least 3 feasible alternatives that respond to the need, with some originality of features and approaches. C-level work is at least 2 feasible alternatives that respond to the need, with only moderate originality of features and approaches.  Unacceptable work means feasibility is not shown, that all ideas are derivative (have been done before) and do not really respond to the need.
