Some Background for the Project Theme – Making a Difference in People’s Lives

Leadership for Changing Times ASME Editorial (7/08):
Executive Director Loughlin said he now sees an “opportunity and obligation” for the Society to carry out its core mission to “… better enable its practitioners to contribute to the well-being of humankind.”

Base of the Pyramid ASME Editorial (9/09):
engineers will be asked to devise cost-effective ways to increase access to food and clean water, effective sanitation, energy, education, health care, affordable transportation, and revenue-generating activities to this underserved population.

To Build a Better World (R&D Magazine, 8/06): Dean Kamen, named the 2006 Innovator of the Year in part for his drive to bring clean water and inexpensive electricity to those who don’t have access to either, says the key question for new product development is whether “the new product was really important.”
