Before assigning work tasks to work stations, the following preliminary steps must be taken:

1. Identify all of the work tasks required to produce the product

2. Determine the time to perform each task

3. Determine the precedence requirements of the tasks

4. Define the target cycle time ct = S ti/n or define the target number of work stations
