There are two distinct objectives that can drive line balancing (cont.)

2. Minimize the cycle time (which maximizes the output rate) for a given number of work stations

This objective is more appropriate if demand equals or exceeds the rate that can be achieved with the available resources (space, equipment, people, etc.)
