DC field windings are mounted on the (rotating) rotor¾which is thus a rotating electromagnet
AC windings are mounted on the (stationary) stator resulting in three-phase AC stator voltages and currents
There are two basic rotor designs, namely, cylindrical (low number of magnetic poles for high-speed applications such as steam turbines), and salient (high number of poles for low-speed applications such as hydro-turbines)¾which are illustrated in the next two slides
