Quick
Items
Rapid Prototyping Machine.
Short
term - We will proceed with giving it to IT for them to maintain and use, with
access rights for us to use on a limited basis.
Long term
- investigate adding an outcome.
If one is added, we will work to obtain/build the proper equipment.
IT117 - The new IT faculty member (Dr.
K) will teach it in the summer, but probably not any other times during the
academic year. We currently have
2 sections offered by John Deno in the Winter for
his one quarter per year contract (20 slots per section).
>
Continue paying John Deno to teach additional
sections as an adjunct (one class this Spring).
> Khairul will ask other machinists in local industries if
they have interest/ability in teaching an Intro to Machining course.
>
Longer term plan is to try to work with the college to get additional
sections offered by IT, or to get another shop person.
ABET updates: "3-5 years after
graduation" is being changed to "after graduation" in the
definition of objectives; "Professional Component" changed to
"Curriculum"; Safe labs and classrooms is being added to criterion 7;
Violating prerequisites is a serious issue and must be clearly documented; We
will be asked to report the initial employer and job title of the most recent
25 graduates...
> Izzi's sabbatical application for Winter 08-09: Was
discussed and approved, as no other applications were made.
Main Agenda Items
Curriculum issues
> We
need to finalize our curriculum update for the new Gen Ed Requirements
(effective 08-09). We discussed
reverting to the University requirements. It appears that it will lead to the
same number of courses (4), but in the areas of fine Arts,
We will continue to investigate it and make a final decision soon to
determine total impact on the curriculum.
>
Student concerns with elimination of PHYS253 as a prereq
for EE314.
>
EE314 add system level understanding of DC motors
> Add
PHYS253 a prereq for ME288?
> Add
BIOS as an accepted technical elective.
Consider adding BIO course as a required Fr. or Sophomore level class.
2.
Assessment Updates from area of expertise meetings
Mechanical Systems:
1. ALL
required undergraduate courses in our area need to be assessed since it has
not been done for three years: ME 224, ME 301, ME 401, and ME 491.
2. We would like to strongly
recommend that ME 455 Mechatronics be made required
for all ME undergraduates (it is currently a technical elective). The new faculty member should champion
this cause and obtain the resources and space necessary for such a large but
vital undertaking. This would be
a great place to do our ABET goal of practical implementation of servo
controllers that is currently in demonstration only under ME 401.
Design:
>
Discussed 351/451 - John will need assistance with GD&T aspects of the
courses
> Make
304 a prereq/coreq for ME472
> Make
380 required for 470 (For course sequencing)
> All
new courses need assessment: ME101, ME303, ME304, ME351 (and ME451 next year)
Fundamentals & Service Courses
> Our
department should still insist that we teach Statics
- Perhaps a good way would be to introduce a
Sequence
Mechanics I and Mechanics II...
We therefore believe that we could make a good case if we could carry
a prerequisite
inventory test at the beginning of next quarter (in my Dynamics
class) asking the students a number of simple questions regarding those
subjects. This test would serve as a good document for our stand.
Materials and Manufacturing:
Lab / Experimental Methods:
Computers, programming and
simulation:
Decide on
the rapid prototyping as a required outcome for all students or a
"technical elective" type of experience.
Thermal Systems:
Proposal
for adding a 1-credit hour "thermal design lab" to the ME412
course.
Other
issues:
·
New online catalog http://www.catalogs.ohio.edu/content.php?catoid=4&navoid=98
(and issues with all approved courses showing up)
·
All schools, departments, or colleges offering graduate or
professional degrees will be asked to submit to the Task Force on Centers of
Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education by January 25, 2008, a
report that assesses the strength of their programs
·
Safety Committee - Formed to consider the list of
safety concerns surfaced in the risk assessment, examine current practices in
the department, and establish policies and procedures and enforcement methods
to ensure safety and monitor the potential risks. The chair (ME lab coordinator Randy Mulford) will be calling a meeting of the members (Shyler from OCRC, Jared Leininger
from SAB, Dhruv Kohli
from GSAB, Izzi from the ME Department Lab
Committee, and Khairul from ME Department Graduate
Program committee.
·
Should we adopt a standard citation format for all departmental
undergraduate (lab and design reports) and graduate (project and thesis)
reports? This could be added to
our Technical Writing guidelines for the department.
1.
Need new leader for Technical Writing guidelines (and website page)

Main Agenda Items
1. SAB: A
new underclassman member was just added to the SAB. Melissa asked the faculty for other
nominations, especially younger students. Ken offered to
ask some freshmen from ME101 if they would be interested in serving on the
SAB.
2. Faculty candidate Jun Choi - A discussion was led by search committee, with
input from students and all department members. After weighing the positives and
negatives the vote was unanimous to make the offer to Jun. It was noted that mentoring and
research collaborations will be important to his success. Greg and Steph will follow up with the details of making the offer.
3. Assessment
Updates from area of expertise meetings
Thermal Systems:
> Izzi discussed the proposed outcomes changes which are
defined at http://www.ent.ohiou.edu/~urieli/me_stuff/ME321_Outcomes.html . The changes
were approved.
>
There was a discussion of various ways to meet the design of thermal systems
outcome, starting with the idea of adding it to ME488. After discussion it was decided that
this probably will not work. Another
options was to add ME417 back to the curriculum as a
required thermal design capstone experience. There were concerns from the SAB about
overloading the senior year, as well as other concerns in terms of faculty
resources and the number of hours in the curriculum. There was general consensus that it
was important to do it right, not just as a module in an existing course that
would satisfy an ABET requirement,
After
additional discussion it was decided that adding a 1-credit hour
"thermal design lab" to the ME412 course may work and has a lot of
advantages. The thermal systems group was asked to
come up with a formal proposal regarding this.

applying for Winter 08, no other applications expected.)
>
Rapid Prototyping machine issues (John) - Is it a fundamental outcome (all
students) or a technical elective type experience. We have had the tool available for
many years and have not used it, so we need clarity on the need and where/how
it will be used in the curriculum and in research before expending more
departmental funds and effort.
Post meeting discussions highlighted possibilities of building one
from a kit for several thousand dollars. Discussions will continue.
>
SAB/GSAB? Update from Matt Dixon

Notes:
1. New
Engineering Reference Librarian Michael Wilson Introduced himself and
discussed services that he can offer to our faculty and students.
2. ME605 in Winter?: Bob proposed Ph.D. student Ernur Karadogan to teach ME 605
(Advanced Dynamics). The general issue of PhD students teaching courses was
discussed, and the general consensus was that it should only happen in
special cases where the student is exceptional and the faculty advisor is
willing to spend significant time as a teaching mentor and to closely monitor
the class to ensure high quality instruction. Since this is a grad course, the Grad
Committee will consider this specific case.
3. Offer
made to Jamie Carneal, he promised a decision by
the end of the week (decision deadline on letter is Oct. 8)
4.
Approved Izzi's proposal to update the ET181
outcomes: http://www.ent.ohiou.edu/~urieli/me_stuff/ET181_Outcomes.html. We will have area of expertise
meetings soon to follow up on the outcomes assessment for ET181, MATH344, and
other courses in the ME department.
5. Prerequisite
changes for ME303, 304, and 470 are in the system. New course forms for ME499a with
variable credit and ME280 and ME380 the new colloquium courses are prepared
for vote at next CAC mtg. We will
be able to maintain 196 total credit hours with these and other upcoming
changes (adding a course for GenEd and dropping
CE223).
6.
Additional discussion of ICMT new faculty proposal focused on the concern
that we must not accept a candidate that will not be a true benefit to the
department in both teaching and research. Most faculty
agreed that it was worth pursuing the joint-search, as long as we maintain
veto power and try to emphasize the ME angle as strong as possible.
7. SAB -
faculty student social at noon on Oct 10th, with pizza. Another student newsletter is being
sent out.
8. Some
discussion of the use of calculators
in class - and the problems with allowing programmable calculators in
some test situations. Although
there are too many unique circumstances to set a departmental policy, the department
will back up any faculty member's decision to ban certain types of
calculators in an exam situation.

Schedule (PURF, SFEF, etc)
1.
Valerie Young and Srdjan Nesic
talked about a new senior faculty
position for the ICMT (corrosion center). They proposed a hiring committee and
search strategy that includes both Chemical and Mechanical Engineers, with
the goal of getting the best candidate for the position and placing him/her
in the appropriate department. It
is likely that the faculty member will specialize in either Materials or
multi-phase fluid flow. There was
general agreement of the ME faculty present that this was a good opportunity,
as long as the department has the final say in whether to accept the
candidate (to ensure that he/she strengthens the department and is a good fit
with the department). Greg will
continue the discussions with Val, Srdjan and the
Dean, and will bring it back to the faculty before a final decision is made.
2. Dave
updated us on the co-op program (ME is the dominant department), and the
college goal to get to 50% participation. The opportunities for co-ops are
increasing.
3. Dave
also updated us on the Public Policy
course/series being developed, and introduced the idea that we may be
asked to "accept" one of the courses within our Humanity or Social
Science requirements.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9/12/07 - Notes
1.
Melissa Broeckelman talked about this year's Faculty
Brownbag Series and some new graduate courses (ET610 Teaching Engineering and
ET611 Practicum on Teaching Engineering). All are encouraged to participate in
the Brownbag series and to encourage interested students to participate in
the classes.
2 Randy
gave an update on 015 and other lab issues.
3. The
faculty learning commons on the 3rd floor of Alden will be having wine and
cheese "open house receptions" in late September. More info will be sent soon.
4. All
faculty and staff are invited to ILRF groundbreaking ceremony Saturday
9/29/07 at 10AM near the volleyball courts, with a reception immediately
following.
5.
Curriculum change status/updates:
·
ME303 will be used as the prereq for
ME470 instead of ME304 to address concerns with co-ops and summer staffing.
·
ME304 and ME351 will remain as co-requisites (even if
offered in summer)

need to staff.
·
It was noted that ME412 will be offered this year in winter and

Quick
Items:
> Lab updates: We purchased three major
items with year-end surplus funds from salary savings (CNC lathe in 011,
Steam turbine apparatus in 015, Instron
Mechanical Testing apparatus in 298).
> Space update: Carole and Khairul to be using 402 and the side room for research
space and as site of the ME 596 lab.
Khairul will vacate 298 to free up visible
lab space for new Ugrad lab equipment. Use of and appearance of 015 is being
improved, and work will continue this year to make it a showcase lab. Randy is coordinating a disassembly
and salvage/scrap operation to remove the large refrigeration unit from 015.
> House Bill update: ~ $22,770
remaining (~$16K spent to supplement operating funds for the 3 major
purchases). Proposals can be made
to the lab committee through Izzi. Details and deadlines will follow.
> Tech Fee update: ~$23K carryover
balance. John will be putting
together a spreadsheet for the standing software commitments and developing a
yearly budget.
> New faculty hire update: We have
forwarded our selection of Jamie Carneal as our first
candidate for approval by the Dean and others. We hope to be able to proceed soon and
negotiate a starting date (Sometime on or after Jan 1st, 2008).
> College budget issues (related to new
building): College needed to pledge money to get the project moving, so
the Dean pledged to use Stocker funds (equipment endowment funds and travel
funds and summer support) to furnishing the new building ($1 million over 3
years). There may be some funds
for these programs from the Dean's general operating funds. $9 million in capital building funds
were redistributed from other university projects.
> Dean's retreat message: Enrollment,
enrollment, enrollment.
·
We are at 1250 Ugrad and 280 grad, and our
capacity (and target) is 1450 Ugrad and 350
grad. Departments should work
with admissions office to develop programs.
·
Having Ambassadors/students contact potential students at appropriate
times has potential to improve yields.
·
Try to involve alumni (have them send invitations to potential
students in their area and invite tem and their parents to a regional picnic
and provide info on applications...)
·
Get advisors to ask proactive questions (is there a problem that could
make you consider leaving OU?)
·
Need to create a sense of urgency about recruiting and retention
·
New committee: ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
o
Purpose: To serve as a
liaison body to the Provost’s Office and Ohio University
enrollment management representatives.
o
Mission: To
act as an advocate for the Russ
College strategic
approach to enrollment targets at the college and department/school
levels.
o
Membership - unknown at this point
> On-line advising evaluation tool will
be used in some form this year (details being discussed)
> Department budget item: $1K per
faculty member for qualifying travel (Covered by money from college and/or
department), Discretionary spending funds of $200/faculty, $100/staff. Make major educational equipment (and
bundled purchases) via house bill.
> Curriculum and scheduling - Ken will
be asking us to update 2-year teaching schedule. Frank distributed a list of grad
courses for the year and asked for us to give him any updates.
Dave
voiced concerns about the impact of the elimination of 403 on the co-op
students, who have had their plans of study for a long time. We need to emphasize to co-ops that
CE222 does not count as a prereq for ME304, and
that 403 is no longer being offered.
The SAB will work on this.
Melissa also brought up ME350 concerns (we will ask seniors in SrD how many need it) and winter scheduling issue for
314/471 (Greg and Frank will work to resolve it).
> No more paper class lists - starting
next quarter access and print at http://classlist.admsrv.ohio.edu/
>
