SCOPE

Perpetual pavement is a relatively new type of asphalt concrete pavement designed to resist structural fatigue distress for at least 50 years. Maintenance is limited to replacement of the surface course. These pavements contain a surface layer of high quality hot-mix asphalt that resists rutting and traffic wear, an intermediate layer of high modulus asphalt that also resists rutting, and a fatigue resistant bottom layer. Perpetual pavements are becoming popular with transportation agencies seeking to reduce lifecycle costs. The long-term benefits of reduced maintenance and reduced traffic control outweigh the slightly higher initial cost of construction. In recent years, agencies have used different methodologies to design perpetual pavement for a range of traffic, environmental and material conditions. These methodologies require validation and calibration to encourage continued use in the future.

The Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment (ORITE) is hosting an International Conference on Perpetual Pavement to discuss issues related to the design, construction and monitoring of perpetual pavements. This conference will provide a forum for agencies who have constructed perpetual pavements to share their experiences and for those who are considering construction to gain from these experiences. Topics will include: design verification and calibration, modeling, instrumentation, construction, and monitoring. Information provided at this conference will promote the proper design and construction of perpetual pavements.

CALL FOR PAPERS

This is an initial call for abstracts for papers that address topics related to perpetual pavement. Upon acceptance of the abstract, a full-length paper will be requested from the author(s). Manuscripts will be provided to all registered attendees on a CD. Topics are listed below.

TOPICS
  • Accelerated pavement load testing and results
  • Calibration and verification of design methodology
  • Case histories
  • Construction
  • Controlled vehicle and nondestructive testing and results
  • Design approach
  • Durability
  • Field data on response and performance
  • Forensic studies
  • Mechanical properties of materials
  • Mix design
ABSTRACT FORMAT

Abstracts should be 500 words maximum and must include the title of the paper, authors’ names and affiliations, and contact information for the corresponding author. Documents must be in PDF or Microsoft Word format.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Submit abstract document file(s) as email attachments. Send these to orite@bobcat.ent.ohiou.edu   no later than January 31, 2006

CONFERENCE FORMAT

In addition to the presentation of technical papers, the conference will include field trips to the Accelerated Pavement Load Facility and selected test pavements.

The conference will be highlighted by keynote speakers.
