Mechanical Engineering Honors Program

Good news! Mechanical engineering students with (a) at least 90 hours of credit, (b) a GPA of 3.35, and (c) have taken ME 301 and ME 321 are eligible for the Honors Program in Mechanical Engineering. Why an honors program? Outstanding mechanical engineering students deserve both recognition for their achievements and opportunity to academically progress beyond normal undergraduate learning experiences. In addition, the Mechanical Engineering Honors Program allows the participant to earn up to 12 hours of graduate credit that could significantly accelerate the completion of a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering.

The program is designed around an independent research project that the student develops with his or her honors advisor. The project will culminate in the submission of an Honors Program thesis through the Honors College at Ohio University. Any faculty member in the department can serve as an honors advisor and the student makes the ultimate selection of advisor. (If interested, faculty research interests may be viewed on-line at http://webme.ent.ohiou.edu/faculty/faculty.html.) The work done on the research topic will be credited to the student under ME 489 and may be used to meet the technical elective requirement for graduation. In addition, a minimum of three and a maximum of twelve hours of graduate credit can be attained by taking dual listed (ME 4xx/5xx) courses. These dual-listed classes will be credited your graduate GPA, so you need to complete your undergraduate requirements with other courses or your project work.

Will an honors program mean more work? Yes. But if you are looking to distinguish yourself from your peers to give you a significant competitive advantage for graduate school or future employment, then you should seriously consider this program.

More information about the program and the sign-up forms can be found in the Mechanical Engineering Department Office or by pointing your web browser to the Honors Program home page at http://www.ent.ohiou.edu/~bayless/honorprogram.
